                                                      New Executive Director Named

David E. Dax of Sayreville, N.J., will become the new Executive Director of the United Way of Lexington-Rockbridge County.  Dax, who has had a long career in non-profit management and consulting, will begin his new position July 9.

Dax and his wife, Betty Goshorn Dax, already own a home in Lexington and had been planning to move to the area.  Betty previously worked as a Presbyterian minister in Rockbridge County.

“We feel very close to the community and wish to make our contributions in the coming years,” Dax said.

Dax replaces LauraJane Wilson, who had been the United Way’s Director for two-and-a- half years. She left this May to become Prevention Coordinator for Rockbridge Area Community Services (RACS).

“The board is delighted that someone with David’s qualifications was available to join our organization at this time,” said Pam Luecke, board president.  “We feel his background and talents are well-suited to the United Way’s mission and we are excited about his potential to lead our organization and serve our community.”

Dax is currently Executive Director of the Franklin Township Food Bank in Somerset, N.J., and had previously been director of the Christ Church Community Development Corp. in Hackensack. He worked for many years for the State of New York in housing and community renewal and has consulted with several non-profit organizations on grant writing and development.

Dax has a B.A. in sociology from the College of Wooster in Ohio and a Master’s degree in Urban Planning from New York University.

One of Dax’s first challenges will be to help the community reach the United Way’s fall campaign goal, which the board has just set at $250,000.  That level is 8.7 percent above last year’s goal, but just 2.5 percent above what was actually raised.  Last year was the first time in several years that the community surpassed the United Way’s goal.

“Last year’s campaign was such a success, we thought we should try to keep the momentum going,” said Luecke. “If everyone in the community helps, we feel the goal is reachable, and our local non-profit agencies will be the beneficiaries.”

The 2007-2008 campaign will kick off in September. Agencies that will be supported by the campaign are:  Arc of Rockbridge, Blue Ridge Legal Services, Meals for Shut-Ins, Rockbridge Area Free Clinic, Rockbridge Area Occupational Center, Rockbridge Area Relief Association, Rockbridge Area Transportation System, Rockbridge 4-H Clubs, Rockbridge Regional Library, Stonewall Jackson Boy Scouts, Talking Book Center, Valley Program for Aging Services, and Yellow Brick Road.
