History & Mission

"How big is the heart of Lexington?"

Dr. Francis P. Gaines, 1949

The United Way of Lexington-Rockbridge County was incorporated in 1950.  In the 50 years that have followed, over $3,700,000 has been raised for local organizations that serve people in our area.  Initially called the Community Chest and then the United Fund, the United Way has grown from a handful of agencies and a $20,000 goal to assisting over 30 agencies and setting nearly a quarter of a million dollar goal.

The mission of UWLRC is to take a leadership role in improving the quality of life of people in the community by assessing needs, raising and allocating funds and insuring the appropriate use of those resources.

The purposes for which this corporation is formed are:
1) To assess, on a continuing basis, the need for human service programs; to seek solutions to human problems; to assist in the development of new or the expansion or modification of existing human service programs; to promote preventative activities, and foster cooperation among local, state and national agencies serving the community.

2) To develop as fully as possible the financial resources, both governmental and voluntary, needed to meet the human service needs of the community and reduce the number of appeals for financial support for services.

3) To muster community support and commitment for the entire United Way enterprise through a systematic communications program which both speaks and listens to the community.

4) To manage United Way operations effectively, and to offer assistance to agencies wishing to improve their management skills.
