                                                                Talking Book Center

One of our patrons (in Lexington) started using talking books in 1980 when he was in his sixties. He is legally blind, but has lead a very active life including vegetable gardening, chicken and egg production, and furniture making.

His reading interests are wide. He reads primarily fiction of various genres including adventure, historical fiction, mysteries, romance, westerns, and travel. When he began using talking books, there were still many books on record and so he has used book recorded disc and cassette books. He has been a Talking Book Center patron since it opened. In the early 90s, he was reading 100-175 books a year. That increased over time to about 200 a year. A few years ago he had a stroke and has been in a wheel chair which has limited his other activities and so he is reading even more. In 2004, he read 287 books and has received 116 so far this year.

“I always thought of the blindness as an inconvenience, not a handicap, but this being in a wheel chair is sure a handicap.”

“I had a stroke two and a half years back and the books are more important than it used to be. And it was pretty important before. Keeps me from climbing the walls.”
